Witteybums - Newborn

About the pattern:
This is a free pattern for a diaper that can be made either hip snapping, front snapping or with hook & loop closure.  The pattern is available in sizes NB, S, M, L and one-size.  The newborn size has an optional umbilical scoop or umbilical snap. The pattern lists the estimated weight range for the newborn diaper as 6-12 pounds.  The instuctions for this pattern are very detailed and helpful, and she even provides fabric recommendations.  The pattern has instructions for a unique style diaper called an “Everything in One Pocket”; which can be used as a flip-style cover, or as an easy-to-stuff pocket that has inserts snapped into it so that they agitate out in the wash for quick drying, but are attached so that you don’t have to fish for inserts.  She has a lot of pictures in her instructions if you want to see more of the Everything in One Pocket style!

My test diapers:
I couldn’t decide between hip snapping and front snapping, so I sewed up one of each.  The rise is slightly longer on the front snapping pattern.  I did not include either of the optional umbilical scoop or snap options, although I think that they would work really nicely on this pattern because there is enough room on the tummy panel to easily accomodate the scoop/snap.  The front panel comes up above the wings; I am not sure of the functional reason for this, but I do think that it looks cute.  Here are pictures (the hip snapping is the teal blue diaper with green snaps, the front snapping is the light blue diaper with navy snaps).

Overall opinion:
I really like this pattern a lot; however, I think that the crotch is a little too narrow.  My newborn inserts are 3” wide, and they barely fit between the elastic in this diaper; so I would recommend adding about ¼” through the crotch.  I like both the hip & front snapping patterns, but if I sew up more then I will go with the hip snapping pattern.  (I also used this pattern to sew medium diapers for my daughter, using the hip snapping pattern, and I loved the diapers; they were some of my favorites!)

Fit update:
Before umbilical cord falls off:
I liked the fit of this diaper on my son at 8.5 lbs, except that the crotch was far too narrow, and unfortunately, that led to a blowout.  I loved this pattern in size medium for my daughter; however, I would recommend adding some extra width through the crotch for the newborn size.  The diaper came up over the cord, so I folded down the front.  That worked well, but including an umbilical snap would have been easier; and would easily work with the design of this diaper.
